In Germany the largest employers is the car industry with a work force of over 866 000 labourers. Germany's car designs have one numerous prizes of car of the year. The Volkswagen Beetle and the Porsche 911 have taken 4th and 5th in the cars of the century award. Germany is considered to be the birthplace of automobiles since Karl Benz and Nikolaus Otto developped the four-stroke internal combustion engines in the late 1870s.
